A great treatment can still fade fast in the wrong routine — and a good routine can stretch a good treatment even further. These are the three things I tell every client before they leave the studio.
01 Wait before you wash (and then wash less often)
Most smoothing treatments need 48–72 hours to fully set before the first wash — tying your hair up, tucking it behind your ears, or getting caught in the rain during that window can leave a crease or undo part of the treatment. After that, washing less frequently (every 2–4 days instead of daily) keeps the treatment intact longer, since each wash gradually strips a little of it away.
02 Switch to sulfate-free
Sulfates are the ingredient in most shampoos responsible for that big, foamy lather — and they're also what strips smoothing treatments fastest. A sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is the single highest-impact swap you can make. It's a small change with an outsized effect on how long your results hold.
03 Protect it from heat, salt, and chlorine
Heat styling, ocean water, and pool chlorine are the three fastest ways to shorten a treatment's lifespan. That doesn't mean avoiding the beach — it means a leave-in heat protectant before any hot tools, and rinsing (or better, wearing hair up) before salt or chlorine exposure.
None of these habits are complicated, but together they're the difference between a treatment that fades in six weeks and one that holds for the months it's designed to. I walk every client through a personalized aftercare plan at their appointment — this is the short version.
